Rafael Nadal returned to the spotlight at the Australian Open and caught up with compatriot Carlos Alcaraz after the final, just weeks after he traded Rod Laver Arena for the snow-capped mountains.
The former PIF ATP No. 1 revealed on Saturday that he went skiing for the first time in 26 years, sharing the moment with fans on Instagram. Posting a photo from the ski resort, Nadal wrote: “After 26 years… it feels incredible to be skiing again!”
The Spaniard has spent more than two decades carefully managing his body due to the demands of the Tour de France, which means skiing is an absolute no-no. Now, retired Spaniards are enjoying the freedom to explore new experiences.
The 22-time major champion’s latest performance stands in stark contrast to his career. In February 2014, Nadal won ATP Tour titles in Doha and Rio de Janeiro, thriving in fierce competition. This time, the setting is cooler and the purpose is purely for fun.
Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn responded to Nadal’s post, commenting: “When I’m healthy we have to ski together!”
American skier Vonn has frequently spoken to the sport and its stars, praising Yannick Sinner in recent years and even comparing the Italian’s composure to Roger Federer.
Nadal becomes the latest star to hit the slopes after Andy Murray took a ski trip with his family in 2025 before coaching Novak Djokovic at the 2025 Australian Open.
