A wave of 20-and-under talent took the spotlight in South Florida on Thursday, with Moise Kouame, Darwin Branch, Joao Fonseca, Rafael Jordal and Martin Landalus all posting impressive wins at the ATP Masters 1000 event. Each of them is a firm lock to qualify for the Next Generation ATP Finals.

Spain’s Jodal led the way with a landmark victory, defeating qualifier Yannick Hanfmann 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 for his first Masters 1,000 victory. The 19-year-old, who was once outside the top 900, has now risen to No. 93 in the PIF ATP live rankings.

With world number five Lorenzo Musetti withdrawing, the path has opened for Jordahl, who now faces lucky loser Aleksandar Vukic in the second round.

American teenager Branch thrilled the home crowd with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Jan-Lennard Straff. At 18, he became the youngest American to win at that level since Taylor Fritz a decade earlier. The southpaw will next face Doha finalist and former world No. 14 Arthur Fells.

Landalus, who grew up playing football in Madrid, followed up with a 6-3, 7-6(6) victory over Marcos Giron. It marked his second Masters 1000 victory and his first Tour-level victory of the 2026 season, continuing his steady progress following last year’s appearance at the Next Generation ATP Finals – when he faced Jordahl specifically in the round robin.

The headlines, however, belong to France’s Koouame. The 17-year-old made history by defeating Zachary Swajda 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, becoming the first player born in 2009 or later to win an ATP Tour event. In the process, he also became the youngest champion at the Miami event and the youngest champion at this level since Rafael Nadal in Hamburg in 2003.

Fonseca, the 2024 Next Generation ATP Finals champion, once again showed her quality after making her third-round debut in Miami last year. The 19-year-old knocked out Fabian Marozsan 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 on Thursday to set up a blockbuster Lexus ATP head-to-head showdown with world number one Carlos Alcaraz.
