Almaty Open: Daniil Medvedev defeats Corentin Mutai to win first title in 882 days

Medvedev, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, has lost his past six finals, including the final in Halle earlier this year.

His defensive style and frequent outbursts have led some to wonder if his ability to compete at the top level is over.

But the 29-year-old has made changes in recent weeks, working hard on the net and playing more aggressively on the back of an improved serve.

He recovered from a loss in the first set against the tricky Mutai to win four of the final five games to take the lead.

The pair exchanged break points in the second set before Moutet took control and forced the match into a decider as he bid for his first ATP Tour title.

Mutai saved four early break points in a tense third set before Medvedev broke serve in the 15th game.

Medvedev duly scored a point in front of the net, and Mutai was unable to control a volley after 2 hours and 38 minutes.
