Pundits claims oilers considering 3 PTO goals – hockey writer – Edmonton Oilers
Entering the 2025-26 season, the team will consider distributing Professional Trials (PTO) contracts to players looking to get a new deal, and the Edmonton Oilers seem to be thinking about some options.

According to sources from two Mutts hockey podcasts, the oilers are considering signing three players to PTO. Two forwards and a goalkeeper.

They didn’t mention who the player was going to be, which led to some speculation about who the player might be, or whether the report was accurate, but the “view” PTO option doesn’t mean they would do that. Each team thinks how they will fill their roster into new sports, so it’s always a wise move to have some backup options in any injury situation. But who can they be?
The Oilers have many PTO options available
Since the Oilers don’t look at any defenders on PTO, we don’t need to consider this. For the striker, there are a lot of options left on the table. The party with Klim Kostin seems to have been released as fans love him in the last game and he needs a new team to start, but he may have a hard time breaking the roster in the roster this time.
Another option could be veteran Max Pacioretty, who is believed to be considering retirement but has yet to make a decision on his future and can open to join the Oilers as he tries to have a deeper playoff run before hanging up. I think he would tend to return to the Toronto Maple Leafs if they were interested in bringing him back, but he had to consider joining the Oilers and becoming a replacement for Corey Perry because they have had more success over the past few seasons and are likely to give him the best chance of a championship.
Brett Leason is another striker who comes to mind. The 26-year-old is from Calgary, Alberta, so it makes sense to try to earn a deal near home. Last season, he scored 17 points in 62 games with the Anaheim Ducks and 54 points in 220 games in his career. He might be worth the chance, but he is something that others might have a hard time breaking into the already deadly forward squad of the Oiler.
As far as goalkeepers are concerned, the only two that make sense are Ilya Samsonov and Alex Georgiev. They both struggled to find their foothold over the past few seasons, but there was no harm in giving them both a chance to bounce back and earn contracts from training camp.
My opinion is that sticking to Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard on Samsonov or Georgiev, but internal competition doesn’t hurt. Samsonov has performed well in highly challenging opportunities, but his overall game and basic statistics have not been very good in the past few games. Georgiev has stood out to a great extent and doesn’t seem like a trustworthy option, but if either of them comes in at the league minimum, there is no reason not to show them.
Time will tell if they will eventually bring in any player on the PTO in the training camp, but if so, the oilers’ blocking space can sign at least one of them if they look solid on the picker.
