New Jersey Devils place Zach McEwen on IR, recall Nathan Legare – Hockey Writer – New Jersey Devils

The New Jersey Devils announced that forward Zach McEwen has been placed on injured reserve (IR) after suffering a lower-body injury against the Chicago Blackhawks.

MacEwen played just 2 minutes and 13 seconds Wednesday night before exiting the game. This is his second injury this season. He appeared in one game with the Devils in October before missing 13 games with an upper-body injury. After rejoining the lineup, he played on the fourth line alongside Luke Glendening and Paul Cote.

The Devils acquired McEwen from the Ottawa Senators last month in exchange for forward Curtis McDermid. He spent last season in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Belleville Senators, recording 16 points in 23 games.

The Devils recalled Nathan Legare from the Utica Comets. He has only appeared in three NHL games throughout his career since being drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins with the 74th overall pick in 2019. Le Gall played 69 games for the Comets last season, scoring 17 goals and eight assists. He has one goal in 11 AHL games so far this season.

Le Gall has been outstanding in the Devils’ preseason, scoring one goal and one assist in three games. However, he did not make the roster for the 2025-26 season and was waived before rejoining the Comets.

McEwen’s absence marks another unfortunate injury for the Devils, who are already losing key depth pieces. Legare, meanwhile, will meet with the team in Chicago and could make his debut Saturday night against the Washington Capitals.
