Red Wings beat Kings 4-3 in shootout after taking a 2-goal lead late in the third period – Hockey Writer – Detroit Red Wings

After a very successful 4-0-1 road trip, the Los Angeles Kings welcomed the Detroit Red Wings for their first home game in 12 days. The Red Wings are looking for their third straight win, while the Kings are looking for their first home win of the season.

A dominant performance from Marco Kasper and the Red Wings’ special teams unit, which went 2/3 on the power play and 3/3 in shootouts, led them to a 3-1 win over the Kings on Thursday night at Crypto.com Arena.

Despite getting off to one of their best starts of the season, taking two-thirds more shots than they did in their last game against the San Jose Sharks, the Kings simply couldn’t score in Game 1. Neither team scored.

The Kings kept the pace going at the start of the second quarter and the Red Wings seemed to find their groove, leading to a lot of quality chances for both teams.

Alex Laferriere, who had been shorthanded several times in 12 games, finally got one to open the scoring on the Red Wings’ first power play, with the teams trading back and forth midway through the second quarter.

Seconds later, on the same power play opportunity, Alex DeBrincat hit a classic one-timer from the left circle.

The Red Wings continued to score on the power play, and just three minutes after DeBrincat’s tying goal, rookie Axel Sandin-Pellikka’s shot was tipped in by Marco Kasper to take a 2-1 lead into the third period.

The situation in the third game was basically the same, with both sides creating chances. Kasper scored his second goal of the game late in the third period on a sweet tic-tac-toe to extend the Red Wings’ lead to two points.

The Kings had chances to equalize the score twice in the third quarter through powerful attacks, including a 10-second 5-on-3, but failed to score.

With less than three minutes left in the third quarter, the Kings accomplished what they have accomplished many times this season and pulled back two goals. Corey Perry started the comeback with his fourth goal in six games. Less than a minute later, it was Quinton Byfield’s turn, and he knocked a shot past former Kings goalie Cam Talbot to tie the game at three.

Both teams went into overtime with the Kings scoring more points than any other team in the league. With three minutes left in overtime, the Kings got their fourth power-play opportunity of the night. Kevin Fiala thought he made a heroic play with a nifty little move in front of the net, but it was called off due to goaltender interference.

Lucas Raymond scored the only goal in the shootout to give the Red Wings their third straight victory, minutes before they thought they had lost in overtime.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Red Wings as they take on the Anaheim Ducks tomorrow, while the Kings will wait to face the New Jersey Devils on Saturday in search of their first win at home.
