Novak Djokovic made a triumphant return to his most successful tournament at the Australian Open on Monday, setting another historic milestone in the hard-court Grand Slam.
The former PIF ATP No. 1 produced a near-flawless performance to beat Pedro Martinez 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 to earn his 100th career win at Melbourne Park. Djokovic is a record 10-time Australian Open champion and is now aiming to surpass Roger Federer’s all-time record of 102 wins at the tournament.

“What can I say? I like the sound of it… the Centurion is very good,” Djokovic said. “It’s great to be a centurion in those numbers. Making history is a big motivation, especially in the last five, ten years of my career. Once I was able to make history, I was even more motivated to play my best tennis.
“I was lucky enough to meet some people early on who taught me and guided me toward the long run in my career: Don’t burn out too quickly and try to have the longest career possible. I’m lucky to still be playing at this level.”
Djokovic now has 100 or more wins at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and French Open and is the only player to achieve the feat at three different major tournaments, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.
Djokovic’s record in Grand Slam tournaments (before AO R2)
Djokovic advanced to the second round at the Australian Open for the 19th consecutive time and will next face 23-year-old Italian qualifier Francesco Mastrelli. The debutant defeated Terence Atmane 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-1 to earn his first main draw victory at a Grand Slam.
Amid lingering questions surrounding his fitness, especially during last year’s run to the semifinals in New York, Djokovic looked sharp and agile. In his first Lexus ATP head-to-head meeting with Martinez and first since winning the title in Athens last November, Djokovic took control from the baseline, hitting more than three times as many winners as the Spaniard (49-14).
The 38-year-old Serbian reached the semi-finals of all four Grand Slams last season and his quest for an 11th Melbourne title could hinge on a semi-final showdown with two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner.

Casper Ruud also defeated Mattia Bellucci 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 and safely advanced to the second round. This was his 50th Grand Slam victory. The 27-year-old, who is expecting a daughter with wife Maria, will next meet Jaume Munar after beating Dalibor Svrcina 3-6, 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-3.
“It’s the perfect start to this tournament, and this course is probably one of my favorite courses in the world,” No. 12 seed Rudd said of Margaret Court Arena. “It’s a really good atmosphere and a great way to start. I’m happy to be back here after a few days. I have to thank Maria for letting me [come] first. I knew she had gone home to rest and was getting ready. “
