Nishesh Basavareddy advanced to the semi-finals of the Next Generation ATP Finals hosted by PIF after Alexander Blockx won the first set against Dino Prizmic in Jeddah on Friday afternoon.

Basavareddy defeated Justin Engel 4-3(3), 4-2, 4-3(5) in the first match of the day to finish the Red Bracket with a 2-1 record and knew that Prizmic would qualify for the Final Four if he failed to beat Brox in straight sets in the second match of the day.

It started quickly, with Blockx defeating Prizmic 4-3(4) in the first set tie-break to seal Basava Reddy’s semi-final spot. Blockx has already secured a spot in the semi-finals with a 2-0 record in its first game.

Basavareddy, making his second appearance in the 20-and-under age group, got off to a good start this week when he defeated Pryzmich in his first match. After losing to Brockers, Basavaredi performed steadily against Engel, winning most of the baseline encounters and rebounding from 3/5 in the third set tiebreaker to claim victory after 70 minutes.

“I didn’t see anything [the permutations]”Basafreddy said. “In the third set, I thought maybe it would be better for my career if I could win in straight sets, but before the match, I just tried my best to prepare for this match. “

Basavareddy is backed by coach Gilles Cervala for the first time in the Championship this week. The French coach joined forces with the world number 167 in December after parting ways with former world number one Daniil Medvedev in August. “We’ve made some progress in the short time we’ve been together, him and me as the fitness coach,” Basavareddy said in an interview with Cervara. “I think we’ve made a lot of progress in terms of fitness and I thought my serve was much better today than usual.”

Engel exited the tournament this week with an 0-3 record. The German will be disappointed to end an impressive year that included an ATP Challenger Tour title and a quarter-final appearance at the ATP 250 event in Stuttgart without a single match win. However, the youngest player on the field this year will take the lessons learned from this week into the new season.
