NHL Rumors: Will Juuse Saros be the answer to the Edmonton Oilers’ problems?

Could Juuse Saros be the upgrade the Edmonton Oilers need?

B/R Open Ice Rink: Frank Seravalli on whether the Edmonton Oilers need to upgrade their network. They have limited cap space, limited trade assets, and a weak goalie market. Could Nashville Predators goaltender Jus Saros be the answer?

“If you’re convinced that Stuart Skinner isn’t the answer, I think we’ve seen enough of a sample to at least ask the question. Stuart Skinner has started 118 games over the past three seasons and has a save percentage of exactly .900.

NHL Rumors: Toronto Maple Leafs trying to acquire Rasmus Andersen

So, slightly below league average. You could argue that league-average goaltending didn’t bring Edmonton a Stanley Cup, and you’d probably be right. Although his playoff numbers were pretty good, and as my friend Bob Stover recently pointed out on Edmonton Radio, he did outlast Jake Oettinger, who is easily one of the best goaltenders in the league, in back-to-back Western Conference Finals, helping the Oilers reach the Stanley Cup Final.

But what’s out there? This is an Edmonton team without a lot of cap space. As far as prospects go, there’s not much to trade here. So how do you go out and find a goalie, and Sharos is the answer?

I know there’s no market for team goalies, but Sharos wouldn’t be my choice for a number of reasons. One, he’s about to enter, or he’s in, the first year of an eight-year contract that will run until he’s 39 years old. Second, his statistics have been poor for two consecutive seasons, including this season and the previous season. Third, from an overall perspective, for a team that doesn’t really have cap space and doesn’t invest that cap space in a variety of ways toward goalies.

What you have is what you get, Stuart Skinner and the wages they have been able to afford over the last few years. That’s what they have left, and if you’re going to devote twice as much cap space to goalie, is 5-foot-11 Juuse Saros the answer?

NHL Rumors: Who gets the extension first – Connor Bedard or Leo Karlsson?

He has long been one of the best goaltenders in the league and a stalwart for the Preds. But when it comes to his size and playoff-winning ability, that’s the big question everyone asks Saros. If you’re an Oilers fan, would he make you more comfortable given his price and your cap commitment? I don’t know that he’s done enough for me to warrant this type of acquisition.

So the next question is, is there a price for this acquisition? Yes, we know the goalie market is thin. This is just my opinion. From a 30,000 foot perspective, considering how much is left on the deal and how bad the recent performance has been, the Natural Predators should pay you to take the Juuse Saros trade. “
