NHL Rumors: Several teams interested in Martin Necas

Would the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers look at Martin Necas if he was available?

fourth period: Colorado Avalanche general manager Chris McFarland said he has discussed the team’s desire to re-sign the 26-year-old forward with Martin Necas’ agent. No deal is closed yet.

It’s unclear what Necas will be targeting in his next contract, but if he has another solid season, his next deal could be around $10 million per season. He scored 83 points in 79 games last season.

James Murphy, RG Media: If Martin Nekas finishes the season with the Colorado Avalanche, NHL scouts would be surprised to see him re-signing with them.

Necas joins Artemi Panarin and Adrian Kempe as the highest-ranked UFA players in the 2026 class. There are reports that the Los Angeles Kings and Kempe are close to a contract extension, but negotiations between Necas and Palanin do not appear to be close.

“I don’t see how Avalanche can make this happen with Necas,” the source said. “They need to lock up Cal Makar next offseason, and even with the salary cap going up, where are they going to find the money to give Necas? So the real question to me now is, are the Avalanche going to keep him as their own playoff loanee at the trade deadline, or are they going to go to another team as a loanee and sign an extension with them?”

Any extension for Cale Makar won’t happen until July 1 and won’t be effective until 2027. His season salary could be as high as $17 million.

Sources say the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers would be two teams to watch if the Avalanche were looking to acquire Necas. Both showed some interest while Necas was with the Hurricanes. The Anaheim Ducks could be a wild card team. They have prospects to offer. The Philadelphia Flyers and San Jose Sharks are two teams with cap space and contract extension room.
