NHL Rumors: Edmonton Oilers have questions, is Jordan Binnington a good fit for them?

Will Jordan Binnington solve all of the Edmonton Oilers’ problems?

sports network: David Amber and Nick Kypreos talk about the Edmonton Oilers and some of their issues. Will St. Louis Blues Jordan Binnington solve one of their problems? Can they even make it work?

Kepreos: “The word coming from Edmonton and their locker room (David Ambler) is that our issues go far beyond our goaltending here. Of course, yes, their defense is a mess and the guys are definitely having underwhelming years on the blue line.

But for now, they need to solve some problems. But wouldn’t you start online now, do what you can to rectify the situation and find someone else?

Amber: What do you do? That’s it, like (Juuse) Saros, how do you do Saros?

Kypreos: “(Jordan) Binnington is mine, right?

Amber: “Binnington.

Kypreos: “Yeah, Binnington. Jordan, because St. Louis is vulnerable. They’re not going to re-sign him to a long-term contract. He wants to play longer. There’s a history of, you know, chemistry with McDavid coming from the Quad. He’s viewed as a player. Like, if you were to roll the dice on any goalie, I think it would be Binnington.”

Amber: “Yeah, you know, the interesting thing is, when we talk about whether the Maple Leafs or the Oilers, you know, have the opportunity to change their roster makeup, of all the teams in the NHL, the Maple Leafs and the Oilers, to me, are in the most difficult position because they don’t have a lot of draft capital. They don’t have a lot of high-end prospect capital. So you actually have to take players away from your current roster to add players.” Goaltenders like Billington.

I just want to know how they do it. I’m not saying it’s impossible. I just want to know how they do it.

Kypreos: “Well, if I remember correctly, you take (Stewart) Skinner’s contract out for two and a half years and then you have to say goodbye to a guy like Adam Henrique for $3 million. That frees up room.

NHL Rumors: What will it cost to extend Robertson’s star?

Amber: “Do you think St. Louis is going to do that? They’re going to trade Binnington for…”

Kypreos: “Well, I know. I don’t think so. I think you’d probably have to move Henrique’s money elsewhere, but, but, the easiest way to free up the cap is around $3 million.

Go ahead and look at those expendable guys now. Earned, made $3 million in the league. He was a guy I picked out of their lineup. I don’t know if St. Louis takes them away or you ship them somewhere else, but that’s, that’s some, some cap freedom right there.

And then, there’s no world in which you can bring in another goalie and you keep Skinner, right? It’s just that it’s over. Let that guy go somewhere else. I think St. Louis would be happy to get rid of Binnington’s contract again next year because they know there’s a major rebuild going on and they have other goalies now that they’re looking at moving forward, which I think is possible.

Amber: “It’s interesting. It’s interesting. I’ll go over Tuesday’s game again. You know, Skinner got pulled after giving up four goals in the first period. He made saves. He made the initial saves on three of the four goals, and guys like (Evan) Bouchard and (Brett) Kulak were standing there and letting guys rebound and, you know, get beat. They didn’t put their stick in the right lane and they, you know, were tapping in for second-chance goals.”

So, I’m not, I’m not going to let Skinner off the hook in any way, but my point is, I, I do think that when you say there were a lot of defensive failures, there were a lot of defensive failures and the goaltending was poor, to say the least.

NHL Rumors: Are Rasmus Andersen’s days in Calgary numbered?

But in my opinion, to truly turn things around, Jordan Binnington needs to do more to address the defensive issues in front of Skinner. But at least, you know, at least with a guy like Bennington, maybe inherently there’s a greater level of confidence.
