NHL Rumors: Could Sean Pinto finally reach a short-term deal with the Senators?

The Ottawa Senators offer Sean Pinto an eight-year contract, but can a short-term deal get done?

sports network: Elliott Friedman on an episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast – NHL Hits about the Ottawa Senators and Shane Pinto’s contract situation.

Kyle Bukauskas: “There’s been a lot of impressive starts to the season across the league. But as you said, Sean Pinto, this is your headliner on Saturday with Ron. The Senators offered him an eight-year contract last week. What’s the situation like between Pinto and the Senators, who is in the final year of his contract?

The Toronto Maple Leafs are going through an identity crisis

Friedman: “As I said on Saturday night, trying to get more details, I don’t think that means a deal is close. I don’t think it means we’re on track to get this deal done. But I do think it’s a realization on the part of the Ottawa Senators that whatever negotiations they’ve had before, they’re not going to get it done, and they’ve got to get more serious. Like I said, I don’t think it’s, what’s the number on it?” In, it’s going to do yes, but I think it’s at least a move in a better direction.

Now, my reaction to this was very interesting. An executive on another team bet me that this is still a short-term deal. As I mentioned, the reason he thinks this will be a short-term deal is that even though Pinto’s contract expires this year, he still has two seasons before he becomes an unrestricted free agent. A lot can happen between now and two years from now regarding where the cap currently stands and where it’s headed.

That’s the first thought on a lot of people’s minds, why do they think this is going to be hard, I mean, look, Ottawa can throw all the money at him and this can get it done. But I just don’t get it, on a team with Brady Tkachuk, on a team where they have to deal with other contracts over the next few seasons. I think they realize they can’t do that.

They’re going to have to do it, just like Shane Pinto is going to make a lot of money. He’s a center in a league hungry for centers. He showed scoring touch. Like he’s one of the top two centers in the NHL. He is. And those players, everyone covets them and they get paid.

NHL Rumors: Ottawa Senators, Vancouver Canucks and Pete DeBoer

So Ottawa has to take action at some point. I just, I really understand this, this guy’s logic is that he thinks it’s going to be harder for them to do long-term trades. Because essentially, if you’re going to study for eight years, then you need to study for two years of RFA and six years of UFA. Even then, we had no idea where we were going. So I like his logic that this is ultimately a short-term deal, but I still think it’s going to be a pretty big number, even for a short-term deal.

I’ll tell you what others have said to me. I think this is really interesting. He is represented by Lewis Gross. The last really big contract he signed was (William) Nylander, which is a little different because Nylander is about to become an unrestricted free agent. But basically, when Nylander started the UFA season strong, they just waited and waited until Toronto had to give Nylander what they wanted.

What a few people have said to me is that if Pinto does what no one expects he will score 90 goals this year, but if he keeps going the way he is, the hammer will tilt even further in his direction. Even if he is not from Ufa for the time being. So, you know, they say unless the player gets what he wants, it’s to their advantage to wait.

So, we’ll see. I think at least Ottawa is moving in a better direction.

NHL Rumors: Vancouver Canucks vs. Ottawa Senators

Bukauskas: “What’s interesting is that while Pinto was in Ottawa. Negotiations seemed to be tough. There was some friction along the way. I know there was one year where the gambling issue was at the forefront. Obviously, that changed a lot of things. He was finishing a contract at the time. I’m not considering that here.

But for some strange reason, the relationship between Pinto and Sanz never seemed easy, as he was their most trusted two-way center. Maybe the offensive numbers aren’t as good as (Tim) Stutzler or (Brady) Tkachuk, but he scored 20 goals twice. Instead, being a locker room guy is pretty low maintenance and a popular teammate.

What’s interesting, I mean understanding, is if you’re looking at, well, where did the hat go? If the team wants to do this for eight years, there will naturally be some time to accomplish some things. But I thought about why it seemed, especially between Pinto and Sanz, that it was never easy to get something done between the two sides. “
