New Napa Sports Center provides year-round space for young athletes – Press Democrats

The Napa family will soon have a new place: an indoor sports complex with a batting cage and a turf field designed for soccer and soccer.

Elite Sports Pavilion received approval from the New York City Planning Commission last week to bring four batting cages and a 123 x 146-foot turf field to the warehouse at 100 Coombs St. west of the Napa River. The facility will be open daily via booking and will also host seasonal sports camps and clinics.

Supporters say the program fills a key gap for local athletes who often drive out of the county for practice and training.

“Providing our children with another opportunity to put down their screens and keep physical exercise is one of the biggest remedies to prevent a mental health crisis in young people,” Napa resident Suzanne Truchard told the commissioner.

Nasser Alimusa, president of the Napa Little League, said the local team was struggling with a crowded schedule and closed weather. He said the current field is not enough.

The Sports Center will cover an area of about 12,000 square feet of 42,886 square feet, which once housed the Sawyer Leather Tannery, today home to the collective of manufacturers and artists.

For applicant Tasha Reasor, the program is more than just space.

“This is a project designed to provide an active adult and family with a safe, year-round place, connection, play and growth,” she said.

The committee also voted to decide a condition that the site’s 72 space parking lots will clear the transport containers before the facility opens. These containers are used for storage by other tenants, violate city regulations and are the subject of past law enforcement cases.

The Commissioner stressed that the problem still has to be resolved through code execution.

“We can eliminate the disease, but not the problem,” said Beverly Shotwell, chairman of the committee.
