Inside Rory McIlroy’s Switch to Taylormade’s New Wedge

At the Irish Open at the K Club outside Dublin this week, McIlroy swapped all four of Taylormade’s wedges for all four of his wedges as he started preparing for Bethpage Black.
It was McIlroy’s debut since ending T23 at the Tour Championship to end his FedEx Cup season. McIlroy has played the same original iron since joining Taylormade in 2017, but isn’t the one who does gear switches often, so it’s worth noting that it’s pretty quick to upgrade to a new wedge.

He first saw the MG Proto among Travelers in June, and Taylormade made precise measurements of the MG4 to replicate the shape of the new forged wedge.

The process began earlier this summer when Taylormade’s team was led by Wedge Craftsman Master Greg Cesario, first showing off to MG5 MG5’s predecessor MG5 at the Travelers Championship.
The prototype is the same as the MG5 except cosmetics.
Cesario didn’t have much time to work with McIlroy on Wednesday of Championship Week as he prepares for the final signature event of the year. But he is helping him lay the foundation for the role McIlroy plays this week.
“That was the first time he was staring at [MG5]and his feedback is very critical because, so to speak, just copy the shape he fell in love with MG4, he fell in love with MG4,” Cesario told Golf last month. “His 60 degrees is very unique. It’s a kind of offset that appeals to his eyes, which really doesn’t represent MG4 or anything else. It is a club that is fully designed and blessed and his eyes want to see. ”
Within the TPC River Heights, McIlroy puts the MG Proto in its pace for the first time, Cesario takes the protractor to McIlroy’s MG4S and measures offset, unique width and bounce
Taking measurements is only part of the puzzle. Cesario has put McIlroy’s specifications in a CAD (Computer Aided Design) file in a fake construct instead of casting structures like the MG4, saying “there are still some conversion elements for humans”.
The process is a little harder than a forged iron, Cesario said, because the shapes are even more compact in tolerances.
McIlroy owns these new MG5s for about a month and is likely waiting for the end of the FedEx Cup season before leaving them in his bag.
His new ball wedge is still bent to 61 degrees, a change he made before the start of the season. The taller loft, thus bouncing higher, makes it easier for him to pass through the turf on the half and three quarters of wedge mirrors.

The incredible feeling of forging is the necessity of having a great wedge game. The MG5 has been forged from soft carbon steel and designed in geometric shapes to provide a great feel and provide excellent feedback. Maximum spin MG5 uses new, more aggressive grooves designed to maximize spin. The grooves between saws create tighter tolerances, allowing engineers to design steeper walls and are designed to maximize the sharper radius of spin in dry and wet conditions. In all conditions, the performance of the original face with spin-tread technology will dissipate moisture to help retain the rotation. The way the tire tread helps your car stay connected to the road, laser-etched channels redirect water on impact and create more friction between the club surface and the golf ball to keep spinning in wet conditions. The craftsmanship is consistent with the handmade consistency and then hone to perfection. Each wedge and unique grinding are precisely worn to eliminate natural human errors caused by hand polishing. Our grinding provides unparalleled consistency and craftsmanship that players can count on every time. The Charcoal Finish MG5 debuts with a sophisticated, sophisticated charcoal finish that reduces glare and enhances its aesthetic appeal in the packaging.

“Even the distance of the Tour Pro, even the distance of the Tour Pro is the hardest to hit,” said Taylormade’s travel agency and McIlroy’s Fitter. “Tour players are really comfortable in half-time shooting, three-quarter shots and full shots. A half-shoot shot shot with a 60° wedge could be about 75 yards, so 60 yards or less is more difficult for them.”
In Ireland, McIlroy also found that new spin tread technology and milling grooves on the MG5 help increase spin and lower emission, especially in harsh conditions.
With the new wedge setting, McIlroy hit a low shooting percentage in the first round of the K Club with 71, leading five.
