Middlesbrough appoints Rob Edwards as new boss

Middlesbrough has confirmed the appointment of Rob Edwards as a three-year contract.

Edwards moved to Teesside to replace Michael Carrick, who was fired after Middlesbrough failed to make the championship last season.

The 42-year-old has been impressive in his rise while guiding Forest Green Wanderer and Luton’s promotion, but left Hatters in January, with the club on the verge of a second straight relegation.

Boro’s appointment is a privilege – Edwards

Edwards said: “It’s a real honor to have the opportunity to be the head coach of this great football club. It’s not lost to me, how big it is, how important it is, what it means to people. Having an amazing fan base.

“It was right for me right now, and it was exciting for me. If I were to come back, I wanted to go back to a place where there was a chance, and we had a great chance here.

“We have a great master who has historically provided the coach with the tools they need to be time, support and try to succeed. I can’t wait to get started.”

Edwards is known for a physically direct approach, and whether this gets along well with Riverside faithful people remains to be seen.

Edwards is our first choice – Scott

But Boro’s football leader Kieran Scott said the former Blackpool defender was a great candidate.

“Rob is someone I’ve known for a long time and I’ve grasped his coaching development,” Scott said.

“He made history with Forest Green Rovers and won a Premier League promotion with Luton Town, an amazing achievement.

“We have an exciting candidate for this role, but we feel that Rob is outstanding and impressed when meeting him and listening to him talk about his vision for the club.

“We are glad Rob agreed to join us and look forward to the future.”
