Mexico Open denies cancellation due to domestic violence

Members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of Mexico’s most powerful and feared criminal organizations, have set fire to businesses and erected flaming blockades since El Mencho’s death.
The Mexican Open issued a statement saying that “the suggestion that the event was canceled due to security concerns in Jalisco is false.”
The statement said: “The event will proceed as scheduled and event operations will proceed as normal.
“We maintain coordination and ongoing communication with federal, state and municipal authorities in accordance with established safety protocols.”
Britain’s Katie Boulter and Heather Watson will compete in the Merida Open in Mexico this week.
The incident occurred in the state of Yucatán, which does not appear to have been severely affected by the violence.
Bolt faces Brazil’s Beatrice Haddad Maia on Monday and Watson faces Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Manero on Tuesday.
Reuters reports that the men’s soccer match between Queretaro and Juarez and the women’s match between Chivas and the United States have been postponed indefinitely.
It also said a match between Necaxa and Querétaro in Aguascalientes was postponed after players fled the pitch after hearing loud bangs outside the Victoria Stadium. The game then resumed.
