3 takeaways from Chargers’ 5-1 loss to Frost – The Hockey Writers – PWHL

The Ottawa Charge host the Minnesota Frost on Tuesday night (December 2) in a rematch of last year’s Walter Cup. The game took place at TD Place Arena and saw both teams coming away with big wins and holding a 1-1-0-0 record. This is the first of four meetings between the two teams this season.

The Chargers’ only goal came from rookie Rory Gilday. Frost ended the game with a dominant 5-1 victory, charging the Chargers early and sealing the game.
Recharging needs a better start
Frost has a fiery glow in this one. They scored the first three goals of the game in seven minutes, one of which came within 24 seconds. Ottawa stayed on their heels almost the entire game, which gave them the advantage the rest of the way. This is nothing new for the Chargers, who have struggled in every game to start the season. This problem almost caused them to suffer a three-game losing streak.
Their first game of the season, against the New York Sirens, was scoreless in the first and second periods. Ultimately, the Sirens struck four times in the third quarter and defeated the Chargers in the home opener. You also look at their second game, which was a win; they only scored one goal in the first 34 minutes of the game. If they want to stay competitive, they’re going to need a more balanced game, especially against a team like the Frostbites.
gildy keep it hot
The fifth overall pick in the 2025 PWHL Draft is certainly making her name known early. Gilday dished out two assists in the team’s most recent win over the Vancouver Goldeneyes, and she continued to show off her offensive prowess in the loss to Minnesota. Ottawa’s only shot from the point found the net, her first career goal.
Look for Gilday to continue her stellar 200-foot game. She’s been getting top-pair minutes, and the results seem to be coming early and in heaps. The Chargers’ No. 1 overall pick certainly looked like a good option early on.
charge attack
Despite three good games, Ottawa played an aggressive game on the ice. They take at least 28 shots per game, attacking the opposing goalkeeper and breaking the net at every opportunity. They also surrendered a lot of hits, posting a season-high 33 saves in their home opener against New York. Their leader in this area is defender Brooke Hobson, who has scored eight times.
Going to the net and checking out is a recipe for success; it’s just that sometimes you get a hot goalie. Although the team has only won one of three games so far, if they continue to play like this, the wins will come.
Ottawa begins long road trip
After starting the 2025-26 season with three home games, the Chargers will embark on their longest road trip of the season starting Thursday night (Dec. 4). They will face the Toronto Scepters for the first time this season at Coca-Cola Arena, with puck drop set for 5 p.m. BST.
After that, they’ll play in Vancouver, Seattle, Chicago (against Minnesota in the Takeover Tour) before visiting Toronto before heading home again.
