Mavericks’ Brandon Williams apologizes for marijuana arrest

Dallas Mavericks backup guard Brandon Williams apologized Wednesday for being a distraction following his arrest Saturday on marijuana possession charges.
“First of all, I want to apologize,” Williams said. “Obviously, this is an ongoing situation. I can’t elaborate further, but I just want to apologize for being a distraction, especially with a 0-2 lead.
“It’s not an ideal time at all, but I want to take full responsibility. I want to take full responsibility and now it’s time to move on.”
Brandon Williams arrested on misdemeanor charges
Williams, 25, was arrested at DFW International Airport on Saturday after TSA agents found a black container containing about 1.5 ounces of marijuana inside Williams’ suitcase.
The 6-foot-1 Williams admitted it was his bag but claimed his manager packed it. He was reportedly unaware of its contents and was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of possession of less than two ounces of marijuana.

according to dallas morning newsWilliams has missed the past two games due to personal reasons. A post on Instagram revealed that he lost a close friend and former high school teammate to leukemia in late September.
Head coach Jason Kidd told reporters that Williams left the team to attend a memorial service.
“Going to the funeral of a friend who passed away and having an incident like this happen, it’s something he has to deal with and we can only be here to support him,” Kidd said.
Williams signs two-year deal with Mavericks
Last season, Williams played 33 games (three starts) with the Mavericks, averaging 14.8 minutes per game, scoring 8.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. He shot a career-high 52.1% from the field, 40% from beyond the three-point line, and 83.3% from the free throw line.
Williams signed a two-year minimum wage contract on April 10. According to Spotrac, the contract includes $2.27 million in non-guaranteed salary this season.
If Williams plays out his full contract, he will have four years of NBA experience when he becomes a free agent in 2026, meaning Dallas won’t have the ability to make him a restricted free agent.
Williams scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench in Dallas’ 107-105 victory over Indiana on Wednesday night. He shot 9-for-14 (64.3%) from the field and missed both three-pointers.
The Mavericks will face the Detroit Pistons on Saturday in Mexico City.
