Jessica Bouzas Maneiro is coming off a breakout 2025 season that has seen her reach a career-high ranking of No. 40, reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time at Wimbledon and reach the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in Montreal.

The Spaniard continued that momentum into 2026 on Monday in the Fed Cup, beating world No. 4 Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-0 at the RAC Arena. This is the first time Gauff has lost in the United Cup in the past 10 singles and doubles matches. She entered the day with a 6-0 record in singles and a 9-0 record overall.

The victory marked Busas Manero’s first career top-five win and gave Spain a 1-0 lead over the United States ahead of the men’s singles match between Taylor Fritz and Jaume Munar.

“I know Coco, she’s a fighter,” Busas-Manero said after the fight. “She was there the whole time during the match, so I knew I had to be there, even if I was 4-1 up, I had to be there. Yes, she won the second set and I went to the bathroom and I tried to focus and play point by point.

“That was my mentality in the third set. [there] Every little bit has power, because even if you are [up] 3-0 or 4-0, you have to be ready. ”

Busas Manero immediately set the tone, breaking Goff in the first game and taking a 5-0 lead. She broke the American’s serve in all four of her first-set service games, breaking the American nine times in total.

Her forehand, which produced 11 winners in the match, fueled her early surge, but her return, coupled with Gauff’s serve struggles, dictated the rest of the match. It was in stark contrast to Goff’s dominant performance against Argentina’s Solana Serra earlier in the week.

Gauff’s first-server hit rate was just 60 percent, and her scoring rate was just under 60 percent. She also struggled with 14 double faults and 54 unforced errors. Busas Manero could only equal Gauff’s number of first serves, but she controlled unforced errors more effectively (41) and successfully converted nine of 12 break points.

Still, Gough refused to go quietly, despite her struggles. She fought back from 1-4 down and won the second set in the tie-break, seemingly ready for a comeback. But Bouzas Manero broke serve first in the deciding set and was out of control. After saving two break points in the 5-2 match, he took a 4-0 lead.

After 2 hours and 12 minutes of play, Bouzas-Manero ended the match with a bagel in the third set, getting some redemption after being beaten by Serra in the deciding set earlier in the week and earning the biggest win of her career.
