Magic saves two-way defender Ethan Thompson

The team’s PR account announced Wednesday morning that the Orlando Magic abandoned two-way player Ethan Thompson. The 26-year-old signed a two-way deal with Orlando in February but has never played in an NBA game.

Ethan Thompson played for the Osirat Magic last season

Thompson competed in 31 games last season with Orlando’s G League branch Osceola Magic. He averaged 18.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.0 steals and 34.2 minutes of games.

The 6-foot-5, 195-pound guard has not drafted it outside of 2021. He has participated in 127 G League games, including 33 games against the Mexico City Caps in the 2023-24 season.

Thompson made some unguaranteed deals with the Chicago Bulls, but was eventually abandoned in both training camps. The Californian also signed an exhibition 10 contract with the Magic last year and was abandoned during training camp.

In the 2025 NBA Summer League, the Guard averaged 10 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 24.1 minutes in five games. He also shot 31.3% from a 3-point range, 6.4 attempts per game.

Orlando Magic now has two open two-way slots

Additionally, the Magic signed a two-way contract signed by Orlando Robinson earlier this week. They now have two open two-way slots after Spotrac abandons Thompson.

Orlando had a crowded backfield this summer after 6-foot-1 guard Jase Richardson broke away from Michigan State. Richardson joins the free agent signing recently for Desmond Bane and Tyus Jones, Jalen Suggs, Jett Howard and Anthony Black.

Earlier this summer, the Magic also withdrew their two-way qualifying match for defender Mac McClung. Former Orlando two-way guard Trevelin Queen is no longer eligible for a two-way contract due to her four-year NBA service.

The Exhibition 10 contract is a one-year, unsecured minimum wage agreement that allows NBA teams to invite players to training camps. This type of deal can be converted to a two-way contract before the regular season begins.

Meanwhile, the two-way contract allows the team to carry three players in the regular season roster. These players are able to compete in the NBA and G League, but they are limited to 50 NBA games.
