Lucas Digne plans to hold contract talks with Aston Villa

A current Aston Villa player seems determined to extend his stay at the club.

There has been some speculation about the future of Lucas Digne in recent weeks, with reports last month that the Villa Park hierarchy could be prepared to accept bids, as low as £5 million to £10 million for French left-back.

He turned 32 last weekend and is now in the last 12 months of his current contract, although the former Everton and Barcelona man seem to be ready for a spell on Midlands to call.

Digne plans to hold contract talks with Aston Villa

According to Jacob Tanswell, Digne “plans to hold contract negotiations as soon as possible” as he tries to extend his time with Aston Villa.

The Frenchman – who has been a consistent starter throughout Unai Emery’s reign – came to the club in January 2022 and generally preferred it to younger Ian Maatsen in the XI that started last season.

But, as the Birmingham Post noted, the 32-year-old is one of the top ends on Villas’ salary bills currently – Capology believes his current weekly salary is £120,000, accounting for 80% of federal earners Emiliano Martinez, Youri Tielemans and Boubacar Kamara.

Will Aston Villa give Digne an obvious desire for a new deal?

Although Digne seems to have shown his position, it remains to be seen whether the Aston Villa hierarchy will repay its desire for contract renewal.

Some may question the wisdom of putting a huge amount of resources into players who are 33 next summer, one of the club’s highest earners and having enough cover in his position.

Others may feel that the Frenchman obviously wants to continue his desire to get a new deal at Villa Park, especially given his importance to the team under Emery.

Indeed, Digg had made a big impression before the Spanish arrived, with former Steven Gerrard waxing the “Wonderful” performance for Aston Villa in left-back.

When the club and players decide whether to offer a new contract, the ball appears to be placed on the NSWE’s court.
