Team Europe wins Skechers World Cup to support Shriners Children’s Team

clearwater, florida World Golf Hall of Famer Bernhard Langer and co-captain Søren Kjeldsen each scored 12 points in Sunday afternoon’s singles match to help Team Europe to victory in the Skechers World Champions Cup in Support of Shriners Children.

Decisive victory for Team Europe

Team Europe also received 10.5 points from Hall of Famer Colin Montgomery as their 230 points gave them a decisive win over Team International (213.5) and Team USA (204.5) in the PGA Tour Championship at Feathersound Country Club on Sunday afternoon.

Morning singles match

The European team made the most progress in the singles competition in the morning, with Alex Cejka and Thomas Bjørn leading the way with 12.5 points each, captain Darren Clarke contributed 11.5 points, and Montgomery scored 10.5 points.

“We all get together this week, players, wives, ball boys and so on, and the way we do it in Europe is when we get into a team, there’s no egos, there’s nothing,” Clark said. “I know we have two Hall of Famers on our team and our roster, but no one is greater than the other, and we all support each other and play for each other.”

Team Europe leads and wins

Europe was 4.5 points ahead of the other two teams on Thursday night, and after Friday was only 1.5 points ahead of the U.S. and 3 points ahead of the Internationals. Sunday morning’s match put them in a comfortable position for the afternoon’s play, and on the eighth hole, Kayederson’s birdie in the penultimate group sealed victory.

Looking ahead – 2023

In 2023, Team USA won the inaugural tournament, going down to the final hole.

“Looking around at this group of people here, it’s unbelievable,” Lange said. “Some of you don’t know what’s going on with us this week, but Alex (Sejka) had a back injury and he’s been struggling. We played eight holes this morning with a back injury and were 7 under. It’s unbelievable. And then you look down and everybody’s doing more than they should.”

Competition format

Three points are awarded on each hole in the nine-hole tournament, which includes improved alternating shots (Scottish Sixes) and better ball shapes from the previous two days. Following Saturday’s Pro-Am, Sunday’s tournament will be decided by 12 rounds of nine-hole singles, with half of the tournament points awarded on the final day.

Jason Caron – Team USA’s top scorer

Team USA’s Jason Caron scored the highest score of the entire game with 60.5 points. Caron, the PGA head golf professional from Oyster Bay, N.Y., last played regularly on the PGA Tour more than 20 years ago and has experienced a career renaissance over the past two years on the PGA Tour Champions Tour.

“I hope this week doesn’t end,” Cullen said. “Honestly, it’s just so much fun to be a part of such a great event and such a great team. What can I take away? I think for me personally, listen, I get to play with all these guys here. So I’m very confident about next year. I’d love to play in a team event like this again. It’s really awesome.”

About Skechers World Champions Cup Supports Shriners Children’s Team

The three Skechers World Champions Cup supporting Shriners Kids teams each consist of six players, including an on-field captain, as well as two non-playing vice-captains who can fill in in the event of injury or illness.
