On Monday morning (July 14), the Edmonton Oilers announced that they had made some changes to their coaching staff, including a new goalkeeper coach, a new assistant and a new skill coach.

In addition to adding three new coaches, they announced that Paul Coffey is being promoted from the bench to a consulting role, with Mark Stuart taking over the role of perpetrating the defender while still overseeing the free throw kill. Head coach Kris Knoblauch will stay behind the bench and video coach Noah Segall won the contract.

Peter Aubry – Goalkeeper Coach

They brought Peter Aubry, who had NHL-level experience with the Chicago Blackhawks, but recently spent some time in the NCAA with the University of Nebraska-Omaha, where he was listed as associate coach.

Analysts describe Aubrey as an inclusive approach to goalkeepers and is an analytical coach. He has worked with Corey Crawford, Kevin Lankinen, Anton Khudobin and others. There are speculations that the Oiler could be extended to the gatekeeper department, but if you do so, Aubrey would be the head of the department.
Aubry is in the ECHL, the American Hockey League (AHL), France’s Ligue Magnus, EIHL and Germany 2.
Paul McFarland – Electric drama coach
After Glen Gulutzan left the Oilers to serve as a new head coach with the Dallas star, the team needed a new power player coach, and Paul McFarland was their guy. Last season, he served as head coach of Calgary Killers in the Western Hockey League (WHL) and had previous experience at the NHL level.
Between 2021 and 2024, he spent some time with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers before heading to the WHL in Seattle. He also has some game experience, playing four seasons with Windsor Spitfires and Kitchener Rangers in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) between 2002 and 2006.
Conor Allen – Skills Coach
Conor Allen is the new skill coach, serving as an assistant coach last season with the U.S. National U17 team. He spent three seasons at the NCAA’s UMass before entering a short career. He played seven games in the NHL, played 284 games in the AHL, 3 games in the German DEL, 102 games in the Czech Republic and 33 games.
He won the Calder Cup in 2016-17 and won the game on the NCAA Hockey East All-School team in 2010-11.
Analysts describe him as a solid coach who knows a lot about the small details of the game and should be able to provide some powerful analysis for oilers.
All three coaches received different feedback on social media, but the Oilers seemed confident in their choices as they aim to win their first Stanley Cup since 1990.
The final thought
I like all three recruiting. Aubry offers a new voice for the need to find a goalkeeper who becomes more consistent, and it seems that he has the skills to help guide them. McFarland’s experience on every level should help, and given that the Oilers have been trying to find a way to make two-person priority units more dangerous than just one person, fresh voices can help do that.
Allen has little experience at the coaching level. However, his previous game experience should help. He doesn’t have a resume to attract Oilers fans to talk about him, but his attention to detail may be exactly what the team needs to overcome the hump in the playoffs.
