Michael Penix Jr. hopes to bring the Falcons to the playoffs for the first time since 2017

Kirk Cousins left the Vikings after six seasons ahead of the 2023 season. He signed a four-year, $180 million contract with the Falcons in March 2024.
A month later, Atlanta used their first-round draft pick to select QB Michael Penix Jr. from Washington. Kirk Cousins begins the first 14 games of the 2024 season. Young rookie Michael Penix Jr. started Atlanta’s last three games last season. Recently, Michael Penix Jr. was interviewed by former Falcon QB Mike Vick. Penix Jr. told Vick that he wanted to bring the Falcons back to the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

The 2025 season will be Michael Penix Jr.’s first year as the Falcons’ starting QB. Penix Jr. had the chance to start the last three games after the team made QB changes at the end of 2024. He threw 775 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in three games. Kirk Cousins will be the Falcons’ backup QB in the upcoming season. There is no mention of how long he will stay on the team.
Recently, Michael Penix Jr. sat down for an interview with former Falcon QB Mike Vick. The QB duo discussed several topics. Penix Jr. told Vick that one of his goals for the upcoming season was to bring Atlanta into the playoffs. They have been drought in the playoffs for the past seven playoffs. In 2024, the team ranked 8-9 with a score of 8-9 and second in the NFC South.

Penix Jr.’s goal to win the playoffs in 2025 is not impossible. The NFC South is one of the worst departments in football. Tampa Bay won the division 10-7 last year. If they take a step back and the Falcons take a step forward, that could be Atlanta’s way into the playoffs. The Falcons didn’t make many major offensive changes during the offseason.
Michael Penix Jr. will play with a similar group in 2025. In three games against Penix Jr., his QB WR Drake London saw 39 goals, dragging 39 goals in 352 catch yards and two touchdowns. The duo showed hope at the end of 2024, and the Falcons hoped to see Penix Jr. take the next step. In addition, having Kyle Pitts offensive offense will be beneficial to Atlanta.
