When Bethpage Black opened, many of the best golf courses on Long Island had been built in 1936. Shinnecock Hills (1891), Garden City Golf Club (1897), and National Golf Connection (1911) were black for decades. By 1894, Maidstone had a basic route and in 1924 a mature route appeared. Creek Golf Club arrived in 1923. Black people are the fourth course at Bert Patch State Park, but not the last one. One fifth – Yellow – opened in 1958.

Recently, new road construction on Long Island has changed from torrent to trickle flow. The reason is no surprise that Mark Twain’s golden rule for real estate investment: land is valuable because it only has too much. In 2006, Sebonack held a ribbon-cut, a collaboration between Jack Nicklaus-Tom Doak in Shinnecock and the National community. But since then, Nada. No new Long Island courses.

Just this summer, a barren land in the seaside village of Hamlet town of Southhampton in East Quogue, and a golf club on the hills. The hills were built by Discovery Land Company, a multinational golf and real estate development company built in Hawaii, California, Mexico, the Caribbean, Portugal, Dubai and others. Although the characteristics of each found land have different flavors, the defined tastes are similar. The club is high-end and private, with luxurious real estate components. The amenities are swinging. If you appreciate the modern spread of modern luxury comfort stations (Wagyu Beef Sliders, Top Shelf Tequila, these things), you can thank Discovery Land for launching this trend. The Hill has all this, as well as a 18-hole layout by Tom Fazio, the first-choice architect of Discovery Land.
Golf courses were never created overnight. But even through slow moving development standards, the hills have an unusually long pregnancy. A course on the site has been kicked by all parties for decades. Once, Phil Mickelson was listed as an architect. In each iteration, the prospect of the course meets the local staunch opposition. After participating more than a decade ago, Exploring Land lost some battles but won even bigger battles.
On its website, the company describes the hill with 110 private residences as a “modern classic Hampton resort” that provides a “seamless blend of luxury and tranquility.”
