Oakmont, Pennsylvania – Hello, friends and a happy Tuesday for the U.S. Open!
I won’t lie, things have begun in Pennsylvania. I seemed to lose my glasses somewhere in Oakmont, which was really annoying because I was on the road for two weeks and needed them to fall behind. Fast forward to this morning, the hotel iron was completely burning down my pants for the class. But then I jumped on the 7 o’clock shuttle and everything started to look up (the barista station in the media center helped). I had a quick breakfast at the media center which conveniently overlooked the range before heading to the front nine with my colleague and friend James Colgan.
I was also covered in a church bench bunker and had to stop and take a picture.
Then it was time to meet Silas, a Sentry First Tee Junior course journalist, to show him the ropes of the day. Silas is 10 years old in the area and is a self-proclaimed “sports nerd” and has had the perfect day in Oakmont.
scope
After our introduction and the microphone started, Silas and I headed to the series so he could watch the players warm up and ask them a few questions along the way. It was his first time in the ropes in the golf tournament, and he was totally in awe. The security guard in the range lifts the rope so he can walk underneath and then brings people into the rope, which is always the highlight of the job for me because it reminds me of only How cool the job is. This is my fourth time opening, so sometimes I forget a show where you can go straight to the best players in the world and watch how unusual it is to hit them.
Silas also prepared for a day. When he asked Michael Kim, James Nicholas, James Nicholas, Aaron Rai and JT Poston’s Caddy Caddy Aaron Flener two questions, he opened up over 40 questions and posted them on his laptop, looking like an experienced veteran. He decided to ask a light, interesting question, a more serious one. I remember my heart exploded and spoke in a shaky voice during my first few times of interviewing professionals, but it was great if Silas was nervous that he hid it. After each interview, he shook hands and thanked them for their time.
Walking and talking
Next, we head to the first tee so Silas can have a walk-through interview with Gary Woodland. Woodland plays with Keegan Bradley and Brian Harman, and the trio can’t be more friendly. Silas walked the hole with Woodland and asked him a lot of questions, including the highlights of his career, his favorite foods and his thoughts on the course.
Soon, the two are talking about their shared love for basketball and the NFL. The group invited Silas to the green and hit some putts, and he had to see firsthand how fast the Oakmont green rolled here. I’m already a Woodland fan, but seeing how much greater his interaction with Silas has become.

Press Conference
Silas scored four goals a day in Oakmont. First of all, it was a great meal. Next is to get Rory’s signature. The third is entering the rope, and the fourth is meeting Bryson DeChambeau. By the end of our day, it was time to check out his fourth and final goal. We headed to the 2pm press conference at DeChambeau, sat in the front row, waiting for Silas to be called. He got the last question of the press, and this is the way to interact:
Silas: You have successfully reinvented the golf game in many different ways in the course. How do you want to be remembered?
dechambeaau: First of all, this is a good question. Excellent work. Second, I hope I can inspire kids like you who one day become gentlemen, kids like you play golf, learn how great this amazing game is in developing relationships, and hope to inspire people to play professionally and come out here and compete for the U.S. Open. That’s my goal. That’s what I want a lot of us to do here, but I know that’s what I want to do. So hopefully I can do this for you and all your peers.

After the press conference, Dechambeau walked to Silas, grabbed his hand and told him what excellent work he had done. Silas laughed and I was reminded again how lucky I could be to do this job here.

article
Silas will write an article for Golf magazine, so be aware. Ultimately, we return to the Media Center to bring together stories he will write about his experience as a reporter for the first Tee Junior course in Sentinel. We talked about every project he completed on his bucket list that day, all the players he met and how he felt. Silas reports that he feels so grateful, inspired and excited, which almost sums up my emotions at the main tournament.
