game review
Neither side scored in the first quarter, but both sides had chances. The Bruins and Hurricanes were tied at 9-9 and struggled for the first goal of the game. Both teams also have tight games, but both teams’ penalty kills are excellent, which shows why they both rank in the top 15 in the league. Jeremy Swayman and Peter Kochetkov made one great save after another. The latest save came toward the end of the period, when Kochetkov made a classic double-pad save to deny Morgan Giecki’s late goal for the Bruins.

The Hurricanes scored two goals in the second period. It was the depth of Rod Brind’Amour’s side that helped them take a 2-0 lead at midfield. Less than eight and a half minutes into the game, captain Jordan Staal took the lead for the Hurricanes. After Joel Nystrom’s shot, Staal faced a Bruins player in front of Swayman and somehow got a hand on his stick and knocked the puck into the net. It was a big man’s goal that made it 1-0.
Just over five minutes later, Mark Jankowski doubled the Hurricanes’ lead. Taylor Hall’s shot hit Jankowski, who patiently caught the puck he deflected and beat the downed Swayman to make it 2-0. The Hurricanes outscored the Bruins 12-7 in the quarter, taking a lot of control of the game and going into the second intermission with a two-goal lead.

Both sides scored two goals in the third quarter. The first occurred at 17:27 when Taylor Hall passed a self-pass on the backboard and bypassed Nikita Zadorov for a chance to break the net. After breaking away from Swayman and overtaking him, he scored to extend the Hurricanes’ lead to 3-0. With the Hurricanes facing possible elimination, Riley Tufte beat Kochetkov in a wild scramble to make it 3-1.
The Hurricanes have a record of 13 wins, 5 draws and 1 loss, and have maintained a three-game winning streak. Kochetkov has won four straight at the start of the season and is currently 4-0-0. Their next game is Wednesday, Nov. 19, in St. Paul against the Minnesota Wild. As for the Bruins, their next game will be on November 19th in Southern California to face the Anaheim Ducks. They improved to 12-9 and 0-0 on the season after losing to the Hurricanes.
