Location Summary
The Baseball Data Director will lead the data engineering team in the baseball system, overseeing the architecture, development and maintenance of our data infrastructure. This role will be responsible for designing and implementing scalable high-performance data pipelines to support analytics, player evaluations, and decisions across baseball operations. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in data engineering, cloud computing and database technology, as well as strong leadership and project management skills.

Basic functions

  • Develop and implement long-term data strategies for the baseball system to ensure alignment with organizational goals.
  • Lead the design, implementation and optimization of scalable data pipelines and storage solutions.
  • Supervise the integration of multiple internal and external data sources to ensure data quality, consistency, and accessibility.
  • Manage a team of data engineers that provide guidance, technical guidance and professional development.
  • Work with R&D, player development, reconnaissance and performance science teams to understand data needs and provide innovative solutions.
  • Implement best practices within the baseball data ecosystem for data governance, security and compliance.
  • Evaluate and integrate new technologies and tools to enhance data processing, analytics and machine learning workflows.
  • Create and maintain data documents to ensure transparency and availability throughout your organization.
  • Work closely with the Baseball Application Director to align data infrastructure with application development.
  • Promote continuous improvement of the data engineering process and promote a culture of innovation and efficiency.

Skill requirements

  • Expertise in SQL, Python, and data pipeline orchestration tools such as Apache airflow.
  • Have extensive experience in cloud computing platforms (Google Cloud, AWS or Azure).
  • A deep understanding of database technology, including relational (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server) and NOSQL (MongoDB, BigQuery) systems. Knowing snowflakes is a plus sign.
  • Knowledge of modern data architecture concepts, including data lakes, real-time processing and distributed systems.
  • Familiar with CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation).
  • Strong analysis and problem-solving skills, focusing on performance optimization.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with a history of managing and developing the team.
  • Experience in engaging in sports analysis or baseball surgery is a plus.
  • A strong focus on detail and organizational skills.

Education and Experience Guide

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, data engineering or related fields.
  • Have at least 7 years of data engineering experience and at least 3 years of leadership role.
  • Experience in designing and managing large-scale data infrastructure in cloud environments.
  • Preferred experience in the sports industry or passion for baseball.
  • Experience with baseball data, biomechanical data and tracking systems.

Working environment

  • Ability to work on evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.
  • The availability of occasional travel to industry conferences or organizational needs.
  • Ability to sit/website for a long time and work in an office environment.
