Members of the Boston Red Sox’s Baseball Systems team focus on designing, building and refining the software and data pipelines used in baseball operations. These tools and applications are an integral part of the decision-making process, integrate directly into the workflows of all departments in baseball operations and provide an effective, consistent and accessible experience when interacting with our internal data sources and applications.

Location Overview:
The Boston Red Sox is seeking senior data engineer, baseball systems, who is a hands-on database expert responsible for managing and optimizing large SQL environments, building powerful data pipelines, and ensuring high-performance access to critical baseball data across local and cloud platforms.

The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, can comfortably manage modern snowflake pipelines and traditional SQL Server systems, and has a strong sense of ownership, providing scalable, efficient, and maintainable data solutions that directly affect decisions throughout the baseball business. This role is critical to the reliability and evolution of Red Sox data infrastructure, supporting analysts, developers, and systems engineers in the domains of player evaluation, baseball science and reconnaissance.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and optimize snowflake and SQL server environments, including warehouse size, query adjustments, and access control policies
  • Develop a powerful data conversion pipeline that leverages data from APIs and file-based sources
  • Use tools such as DBT, Snowpipe and Snekark for data conversion
  • Design, manage, and monitor data pipelines that transfer structured and unstructured data from Azure Blob storage to snowflakes for reliability, performance and cost-effectiveness
  • Maintain and modernize traditional SQL Server data pipelines to improve performance through query optimization, indexing policies and resource tuning
  • Contribute to infrastructure design and software lifecycle phases – including technical design, testing, implementation and quality assurance
  • Proactively support critical production systems to quickly and effectively solve pipeline or performance issues
  • Work with software developers, analysts and other stakeholders to support analytics, operations and reporting requirements across baseball operations
  • Join the data engineering and software development teams in code reviews, architecture discussions and best practices for DevOps

ability

  • Capabilities and abilities to apply academic or application experience in areas related to software development or data engineering.
  • Advanced understanding of modern databases, SQL and query optimization, stored procedures, views, and other database objects
  • Ability to design data solutions to allow cost-effective, scalable, fast and flexible solutions to support front-end development, analyst work, and data health and monitoring needs
  • Ability to quickly pick up and think creatively and critically to solve problems
  • A basic understanding of contemporary baseball and/or sports analysis and development practices
  • Teamworkers working effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders

Other qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering or related technical fields
  • 3-5 years of experience in the data engineering or data platform role, focusing on database performance and pipeline reliability
  • Strong development and optimization tips for SQL, including stored procedures experience, indexing and querying query tuning in SQL Server
  • Hands-on experience managing and developing in snowflakes, including warehouse expansion, role-based access and usage monitoring
  • Using tools like DBT, Snowpipe (or equivalent), you can be proficient in building and maintaining data pipelines from Azure Blob storage to snowflakes
  • A solid understanding of ELT/ETL concepts and data architecture best practices across cloud and hybrid systems
  • Very preferred to be familiar with DBTs for data transformation and modeling
  • Having GraphQL experience is a plus sign, but not required
  • Ability to work independently and as a team in a fast environment
  • Ability to pay close attention to details effectively multitasking
  • Work comfortably remotely when needed and communicate with all team members using zoom, team, casual, Trello and other tools
  • High professionalism and ability to maintain confidential information
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
