game review
While both teams were on offense, the goalie stole the show. After holding off heavy pressure from the Penguins in their own zone for the first four minutes, San Jose’s William Eklund found the puck and skated it the other way. He forced Jarry into two outstanding saves in high-danger areas to keep the game scoreless. With 9:39 left in the game, Nedelkovic made three key saves with right-hander Ben Kindel to keep the game deadlocked. Although Pittsburgh led 18-11, neither team was able to score.
In the second quarter, the score became more open for both sides, and both sides had good opportunities. The Penguins’ best chance in the first five minutes came from a battle in front of the net. The crossbar came into play to keep the game scoreless. Michael Misa came close to opening the scoring for the Sharks, but Jarry produced a fine left-wing save to keep the 18-year-old at bay. The first goal of the game was finally scored at 7 minutes and 35 seconds. Kris Letang’s shot from the blue line was deflected off Sidney Crosby’s stick for his third of the season. Despite an 11-4 shot advantage at midfield, the Sharks were unable to tie the game.
The Penguins extended their lead to 7:02 of the third quarter. A great pass between Evgeni Malkin, Justin Brazeau and Anthony Mantha ended with Mantha hitting the puck over the crossbar for his second goal of the season. Minutes later, the Sharks piled on the pressure. Jarry made a big save to secure his buzzer-beater. Nedelkovic tied the game with 21.8 seconds left, and Malkin scored his second point of the night on an empty-net goal to make it 3-0 and secure the Penguins’ second win on the road.
The Sharks and Penguins resume action on Tuesday night (October 21). The Sharks begin a four-game road trip on the East Coast, starting with the New York Islanders. The Penguins return home to take on the Vancouver Canucks at PPG Paints Arena.
