Why nothing is meaningful for golf club rankings

You’ve heard of this on this platform before, but there’s no “best” when it comes to golf clubs.
In this week’s golf episode, co-host Johnny Wunder explains why “what is the best” is for golf club rankings, which simply doesn’t work.
“It’s a timely snapshot, no – for golfers, it’s not good to rank golf clubs, especially now,” Wunder said. “Now, 50 years ago, there might be a debate because there are explosions, there are losers, and some people just have bad ideas.
“Even bad ideas explode these days. Like, they’re all good.”
Almost every golf club on the market can help someone achieve a specific goal in the game. Again, not every golf club looks “good” to everyone, because it may not be designed for a particular golfer or what the golfer wants to do.
Most of these “best” lists are based only on a few days or weekly tests with a particular golfer. Not necessarily an all-inclusive sample. Even if a lot of player testing is done, it is not feasible to consider all possible factors that the club does well for someone.
“But what happened to these popular lists is that it does give you the stigma of this star, or it’s a gold medal, or it’s a gold medal,” Wunder said. “And it was Bob and Betty Rose who stayed on the Arizona practice field for two days, saying nothing about them except hitting the driver and 3 wood all day. They wrote little notes and they’ll go, which is good, which is good, which is right.
“With different lofts, with different types of heads, with different axes, with different lengths, with different balls. They simply didn’t fit it. Like, it was a club, and it hit it, and it told me what you think.”
That’s why the trick is figuring out which one is right for you and the settings, axes, and other factors that can be determined in the fitting environment.
At a golf course, our goal is to help you do this, and the best way to be healthy is to be healthy.
“For golfers, the best thing is to encourage them to be healthy, give them as much information as possible and then get them in there,” Wunder said.
