The world’s No. 2 easily defeated local favorite Tiafoe to advance to the semi-finals

Jannik Sinner continued his flawless run at the Miami Open hosted by Itau on Thursday.
The PIF ATP Ranking No. 2 defeated local favorite Frances Tiafoe 6-2, 6-2 to seal a semifinal spot at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Florida. Sinner broke his opponent’s serve in the first game at Hard Rock Stadium and barely looked back en route to a 71-minute victory.

“I think starting games is very important,” Sinner said. “When you start to break up, it already gives you a little bit of confidence. At the same time, they can be very aggressive, so I kept my shots as tight as possible. And mentally, there were going to be some ups and downs on both sides, so I tried to stay very calm and take advantage of the opportunities I could get. I think today, that was the key.”
Sinner dropped just nine points on serve in Thursday’s victory, finishing with an overall performance rating of 9.65 (well above the ATP Tour average of 7.29), according to TDI Insights. At times, the Italians reduced even the normally raucous home fans to relative silence with their overwhelming performances.
Sinner is aiming to become the first man since Roger Federer in 2017 to complete the coveted “Sunshine Double” in the same year, winning Indian Wells and the Miami Open, where he will face either third seed Alexander Zverev or 18th seed Francisco Cerundolo in the semi-finals. The 24-year-old has reached the semifinals in four of Miami’s five games.
“Gonna be hungry [for more success]I think it’s natural,” Sinner said after winning his tenth straight game. “Mentally you have to stay calm and relaxed off the court because I’ve played a lot of tennis in the last three or four weeks, with all the practices and everything. I’m trying to keep going. I know this is my last hard-court match on clay, so I’m happy to be in the semi-finals again.”

It didn’t take Sinner long to assert his authority in his first Lexus ATP head-to-head meeting with Tiafoe since the 2024 Cincinnati Open final. The Italian put in a near-flawless performance, hitting plenty of clean shots to get into the first set.
With strong support from his team, Tiafoe admirably regained his composure in the opening game of the second set to avoid further danger. The Red Line Sinner once again created a break point, but the American held on to earn herself an early toehold.
However, sinners are not long denied. The Italian continued to power from the baseline and eventually converted his third break point in the next game. It seemed like a decisive break given the way the second seed was serving, and he dropped another game before completing the victory.
