Is there a rule against playing music on the pitch? Ruler

The rules of golf are tricky! Thankfully, we have the guru. Our rules experts know this book inside and out. Have a question? He’s got all the answers.

Are there any rules for playing music on the field? In my opinion this should not be allowed as it has the potential to distract or help the player. Do I have a case? —Paul Dehner Sr., via email

With apologies to the late Robert Palmer, we don’t really like this question. As always, the Doctor is here with news for you: You may have a case. Music is played specifically to eliminate distractions or to help resolve a rhythm violation of Rule 4.3a(4).

That said, playing music does not constitute a violation in itself, but consideration of others should still be considered.

Rules Guy: My distracted match play partner accidentally picked up my ball. What now?

My partner and I were playing an early morning game. We each wore a pullover to protect ourselves from the cold. On the seventh hole, he took off his jumper as his bag lay across the green and hung it on the flagstick as he pushed it into the hole. None of us know if this is allowed. —Bruce Reed, Seattle

Rules Guy’s beloved Aunty Style Lady tells us that jumpers are allowed if the color doesn’t conflict with the colors of the flag.

From a rules perspective, the only potential penalties we can think of are intent-based – say, your partner did it on purpose to move the flagstick off center, or to cast a shadow to aim.

Without a desire to help his play, using the flagpole as a coat hanger would be fine, even if it feels a little presumptuous.
