July 10: The Giant has sent an infielder Sergio Alcántara According to his MLB.com Transactions Tracker, directly with Triple-A Sacramento. This shows that he cleared the saving throw after being assigned as a mission a few days ago. He has the right to elect a free agent, but it is not clear whether he will exercise his rights.
Alcántara celebrates his 29th birthday today. He signed with a minor league trade in the offseason and was selected for the major league roster last week because the Giants were a bit of a snake in the infield. In that window, he entered a game, hitting out 0-4 with two strikeouts.
That was his first major league action in several years. He appeared in the major leagues in the 2020-22 season with the Tigers, Bears, Rattlers and Padres. Now, he has a .207/.278/.340 professional batting line in this year’s game.
He is considered a solid defender, and his career bounces between shortstop, third base and second base. He could stick with the Giants as a glove-first infielder, or head to the open market to see if he has other opportunities.
