Indian Wells: Sonay Kartal beats Madison Keys for comeback win

Kartar said she would prioritize the recovery of her back ahead of a meeting with defending Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the round of 16.

“it [the back] That’s a pretty big hurdle,” Kartar added.

“I didn’t really train yesterday so I tried to recover as much as I could, so I think the focus now is just to recover and do the same thing over the next few days to get back out there.”

Kartar wasn’t the only player to create an upset with a comeback win on Monday.

World No. 44 Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic eliminated defending champion and Russian eighth seed Mirra Andreeva in a hard-fought 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 victory in a match that lasted 2 hours and 48 minutes.

Meanwhile, third seed Rybakina earned a spot in the fourth round with a hard-fought 6-4 6-4 victory over Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk.

World number two and defending Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek defeated Greece’s Maria Sakkari, while American fifth seed Jessica Pegula fought back against Jelena Ostapenko to reach the last 16.
