Indian Wells: Sonai Kartar and Jacob Fearnley advance to second round

Britain’s Sonai Kartar and Jacob Fearnley both won straight sets at Indian Wells to advance to the second round.

The 24-year-old Kartal defeated Thailand’s Lanlana Tararudy 6-4 6-4 to set up a duel with American 20th seed Emma Navarro.

But it was far from plain sailing for Britain’s second-ranked player, who fought back from two sets down 4-2 to win in one hour and 48 minutes.

British men’s singles No. 3 player Fearnley will next face American seventh seed Taylor Fritz. The 24-year-old defeated Bosnian player Damir Zumkh 6-3 6-3.

However, fellow Briton Fran Jones lost in straight sets to American qualifier Kayla Day, who won 6-3 6-1 to set up a showdown with Poland’s world number two Iga Swiatek.

Emma Raducanu begins play on Friday when she takes on Russia’s Anastasia Zakharova in the second round.
