Game Preview

The Minnesota Timberwolves faced the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals Tuesday night. Minnesota hasn't played for six days since defeating the Golden State Warriors in five games in the second round of the series.

Minnesota had six days off each of the first two playoff series, winning the first game against the Los Angeles Lakers and throwing the first game to Golden State. The Wolves won each series in five games.

The Timberwolves made their second straight season and third finals in history. Minnesota has never advanced to the NBA finals.

Meanwhile, the Thunder defeated the visiting Denver Nuggets 125-93 in Game 7 of the second round of the series. Oklahoma City made its first Western Conference Finals since 2016 and is seeking its first final since 2012.

Oklahoma City played a week between games and then played nine days between games against the Nuggets before the first round series against Memphis.

The Thunder and Timberwolves played the regular season series in each game. Oklahoma City won 113-105 at home at Minnesota on December 31 and 130-123 on February 23.

However, on February 13 and 131-128 in overtime at Oklahoma City on February 24, the Wolves beat the Thunder 116-101 in the final score of 116-101. Minnesota was 6-2 in the last eight road games against OKC.

Minnesota's Rudy Gobert played in one of the four regular season games – the loss on New Year's Eve – and Chet Holmgren appeared in two games.

“Apple is given to Apple, I don't know if these games are the perfect framework to appreciate the series,” Thunder coach Mark Digneault said. “It's going to be different.”

According to ESPN's basketball power index, Oklahoma City has a 69.7% chance of beating Minnesota in Game 1. The Timberwolves have been 5-1 in 5-1 in the last six road games, while the Thunder have been 6-1 in the last seven home games.
