How this ‘viral’ shot can boost your bunker game

Earlier this year, Keith Mitchell shocked golf fans when he bravely nearly holed a shot from a greenside bunker at the 2025 Texas Children’s Houston Open. Questionable Danger Shot? Thai Spin – A shot made famous by Kiradech Aphibarnrat from Thailand.

For many golfers, this is the first time they have seen a ball hit in the sand. But, according to GolfWatch teacher Parker McLachlin, it could be the key to improving your greenside bunker game.

In a recent Instagram post, McLachlin, also known as “The Short Game Chef,” revealed that hitting Mitchell’s unique shot out of the bunker is a great way to practice shallow arc depth and low-spot control, one of the most important keys in the bunker.

Why Thai Spin Balls Can Improve Your Sand Trap Game

It works because it teaches you to get into the sand at the right time. If you watch Mitchell in the video above, you’ll see that his club goes directly into the sand beneath the ball rather than behind it – a common mistake amateurs make in the bunker.

“Look at how much sand he took,” McLachlin said. “It’s basically a shot out of the bunker.”

While hitting shots from this lie can be nerve-wracking, practicing it can also help you understand whether you’re utilizing the club’s flex correctly and help you avoid digging the front edge.

To replicate what Mitchell did above, prepare to shoot in a slightly narrow stance. Play the ball in the middle of your stance. Notice that his wrists are relatively straight as he lets his body and arms pivot back and through to drive the action.

“It’s like putting,” Mitchell said.

If you do it correctly, the ball should come out low, but controllable with a lot of roll. With enough practice, you can hit greenside bunkers with more confidence because you know you’ve found the bottom.
