game review
Three goals were scored in the first quarter, one by the Hurricanes and two by the Jets. Jordan Staal scored 16 seconds into the game to give the visiting team an early lead. It was the third-fastest away game goal in franchise history. He beat Eric Comrie after receiving a great pass from Jordan Martinuk. The Jets’ Josh Morrissey and Gabriel Vilardi scored two goals to put Winnipeg ahead. Both goals came after Hurricanes turnovers, and the second came on the power play. Morrissey scored his fifth goal of the season and Vilardi his seventh.

Starr scored his second goal of the game in the second period after Jalen Chatfield’s first shot. This is his seventh goal in 21 games this season. The last time he scored 20 or more goals was in the 2015-16 season, and he’s currently on pace to break that record. Just over three minutes later, Seth Jarvis scored against his hometown team shorthanded. K’Andre Miller forced a turnover and found Sebastian Aho, who took the first shot but was saved by Comrie. Jarvis scored his second shorthanded goal of the season and his 11th on the spot.
Both sides scored two goals in the third quarter. On the Hurricanes’ third power-play opportunity, Andrei Svechnikov blasted a single past Comrie to double the lead. Svechnikov received an assist on a great cross-ice pass from Nikolai Ehlers in his first game back in Winnipeg. The Jets pulled within one point as Vilardi scored his second goal of the game. He tried to center the puck, but it slid off Chatfield’s skate and into the net. It was a friendly injury to Brandon Busey, who couldn’t stop a random goal like this.

Busey kept the Hurricanes ahead as the final minutes wound down. He ended up stopping 24 of 27 shots to earn his fifth win in six games this season. He has been a key addition to the team since being claimed off waivers before opening night in October.
After this victory, the Hurricanes extended their winning streak to five games and currently have an away record of 2 wins, 0 draws and 1 loss. They have taken five points from a possible six in four away games and extended their lead in the Metropolitan Division. As for the Jets, their two-game winning streak was snapped with the loss. It will be interesting to see how they deal with being without Connor Hellebuyck for the next 4 to 6 weeks due to knee surgery. Over the next few weeks, they’ll have to rely on Comrie to lead the charge.
