One day since his last ATP Masters 1000 victory, China’s wild card Shang Juncheng won another victory at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Thursday, where he won Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4, 3-6, 3-6, 6-3.
The 20-year-old left-handed was injured from January to August but returned to Toronto to tour in July. After last month’s second round in Chengdu, Zhou won his biggest win since returning home in the 1000 Masters, where he beat 32 winners in one hour and 57 minutes to eliminate Kovacevic.
“This year has been the hardest year of my life, but that’s not enough to disappoint me,” Shang said. “But it feels great to play at home, there are a lot of people, and everyone cheers for me, which gives me a lot of energy. As everyone said, if you don’t know you, you’ll be stronger, and that’s what I want to do.”
#NextGenatp Shang entered the Hong Kong semi-finals at the start of the season, becoming the Chinese player who won the ATP Tour title on home runs in Chengdu last year. In order to find his best in Shanghai again, World No. 237 will play the ninth seed Karen Khachanov in the next game.
Earlier, American Jenson Brooksby continued his good form with a 7-6 (2), 6-1 victory over James Trotter. The 24-year-old reached the semi-finals at the ATP 500 event in Tokyo last week and is now in the top 50 in the PIF ATP rankings. Brooksby failed early this year and will play Tallon Griekspoor next.
In the Stadium Court, Benjamin Bonzi and Czech qualifiers Dalibor Svrcina senior. Bonzi overcame the large-scale service American Reilly Opelka 7-6 (2), 6-4, and SVRCINA was forced to retire due to injury after losing the first set 5-7.
Kamil Majchrzak beat Ethan Quinn 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth round of Wimbledon, improving to 2-0 in the couple’s Lexus ATP Head2head series, while Jesper de Jong lowered the Chinese wildcard 6-7 (1), 6-2, 7-6 (3). Argentinians Francisco Caseana and Camilo Ugo Carabelli are both advanced. Caseana eliminated Ugo Blanchet 6-4, 6-2, and Ugo Carabelli entered the second round when Cincinnati semifinalist Terence Atmane was forced to retire 4-4 in the first set.
Nuno Borges, Alejandro Tabilo and Arthur Cazaux Advanced. Borges beat Botic Van de Zandschulp 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5), and Chengdu champion Tabilo defeated Marcos Giron 6-4, 6-3. Cazaux caught Pedro Martinez 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
Novak Djokovic ran Marin Cilic on Friday, with Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton taking action.
