Holger Rune moved closer to his first ATP Masters 1000 title in nearly three years at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Tuesday, where he overcame giant Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-4, 6-7, 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-3.

Dane, who won his only Masters 1000 title in Paris in 2022, will have to be patient against Mpetshi Perricard. Rune won only 27 per cent (17/63) of points on the Frenchman’s serve, according to Infosys ATP data, but the match saw two crucial breaks to advance to the quarter-finals after two hours and 30 minutes. The five-time tour-level titlist now leads the 32nd seed 2-1 with the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2head series.

Rune’s best result at this level in 2025 was at Indian Wells, where he lost to Jack Draper in the finals. To continue his campaign this week, the tenth seed will next play Tallon Griekspoor or qualifier Valentin Vacherot.

Rune is ranked 12th in the PIF ATP live rankings and currently trails eighth-placed Lorenzo Musetti, who is still alive in Shanghai, on 945 points. The rune will be revealed in the Hard-Court event and will rise to 3,290 points. The 22-year-old is targeting a second appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals on the circular stage in 2023.

In the first match of the day, Zizou Bergs saved two match points to get past Canadian Gabriel Diallo 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8) and reach his maiden ATP Masters 1000 quarter.

The 26-year-old recovered from squandering a 4-1 lead at the decider, saving match points at 6/7 and 7/8 in the third set before claiming victory in his third match two hours and 49 minutes later.

After the game, Burgess was asked if it would have been easier to save a match point or convert one of his chances.

“Well, probably the guy who saved (the match point) because that’s where he served,” Burgess said. “It was easier to finish on the service than to try to save the game on the return. But it was really difficult in the end. He didn’t give me any free points. All the match points I really had to go find.

Bergs, fifth in Belgium, reached the quarterfinals in the Masters 1000 and second in Shanghai, joining David Goffin (2016, ’24). He is ranked No. 38 in the PIF ATP Live rankings and will rise to a career-high on Monday. To maintain his run, Burgess could meet Novak Djokovic in the last eight matches. The Serbian plays Jaume Munar later on Tuesday.

“It means a lot, and you probably saw it in my reaction,” Burgess said. “It’s pretty amazing, I feel like my trajectory is a little different, my speed on the road is a little different. I’m 26 years old and I’m getting where I am in my career. I know it’s not just ups and I’m frustrated this year, but I’m really curious where my potential is going to take me.”
