Golf Business News – Supporting the Sustainable Future of Golf

Without regulations changing, many leisure operators, including golf courses, will lose the opportunity to irrigate water.
To facilitate change, the UK Golf Federation is working with international environmental solutions to gain alternative water as an optional sustainable water source to protect the future of our industry.
challenge:
Climate change, population growth, pollution and overuse of water reduce water supply, especially irrigation in recreational facilities at golf courses such as golf courses. Many clubs rely on electricity or abstraction (take water from rivers or underground), but both sources are under pressure:
- 65% of golf clubs use main water and may face restrictions due to national savings targets.
- Under environmental laws, abstract licenses are being reduced or revoked.
question:
Water companies do not require water supply for irrigation. Even capturing rain or flooding is not simple – it is owned by an environmental agency and licensed.
What can be done? Here are some practical solutions:
To remain resilient, the club needs:
- Reduce irrigation areas and water use.
- Improve irrigation efficiency and reduce leakage.
- Create on-site water storage (for example, a lagoon or water tank).
- Explore other sources such as roof/park runoff or treated wastewater.
- Adapt to curriculum management to reduce reliance on irrigation.
Why the Charter is Important
The charter of recreational operators led by the British Golf Federation, water and other national institutions helps the club to demonstrate a commitment to sustainable water use and drives moderation change.
By signing the charter, the club promises:
•Educate members on water sustainability.
• Improve irrigation infrastructure.
• Cooperate with the water authorities.
•Share successful case studies.
• Emphasize environmental and community interests.
•Develop a water elastic plan.
• Publish their efforts to inspire others.
Support Club: Weekly Briefing
The UK Golf Federation and Environmental Solutions International provide weekly briefings covering:
• Water audit and use tracking.
• Intelligent irrigation (weather/soil control).
•Climate-adjusted watering according to ET rate.
•Targeted irrigation areas and drought-tolerant grasses.
•Replacement water sources such as rainwater or rainwater.
•Storage infrastructure and grants.
• Drought plans that communicate clearly with members.
•Sustainable drainage and long-term planning future prevention.
