14 Club Myth: Why the average golfer can perform better in fewer clubs

Each golfer can use up to 14 clubs. Generally speaking, this means for a more powerful player, similar to a driver, several wood/hybrids, then a 4-pw, three wedges and a putter.

But not everyone needs 14 clubs. Eddie Hammond is a PGA professional who does a lot of club accessories at work and he explains how lighter bags can improve your game.

process
“If someone comes to me and say they want a new bag of clubs, we'll always start in the middle. Someone thinks you start at one end of the bag, but we'll start with the 7 iron, and then we can decide if the player needs 6 or 5 iron heads. Then we'll check out whether the Hybrids or Fairway Woods or Fairway Woods and, ultimately, finally.

“When you used to buy irons you have to get to the wedges from 3 irons and now we order them separately.

“One big thing for most manufacturers is that you’re looking to raise the club’s velocity by five miles per hour.

“Obviously, people like Rory McIlroy have faster club heads, possibly with a 15 yard gap between irons, while golfers with slower swings may have only 5 yards between clubs.

“So if you need 14 clubs, you can work out your body. You may only need 9.

“If your gap is only four to five yards. Every club, then your gap is too complicated. You really want to get everyone into a 10 yard gap. So for many golfers, we'll just be the iron or the contradiction that suits them.”

“We had a guy coming in with a bag of 14 clubs and he walked halfway through. By the time we finished the full pitch meeting, he had a driver, 7 wood, hybrid, a few irons, a hardcore, a wedge and a putter. He’s now a 10-yard gap and his hits and distances are also high in between everything he hits.

“In the past, we and everyone dropped out of school 3 times, now we dropped out of school 4, 5 and some 6 irons.

“When we get into the hybrid, it's the same thing. Most people can hit 6 and 5 hybrids, but you have the same problem – 4 Hybrid doesn't go further than 5 times because you don't generate the speed of the club head and the speed of the ball and then get 5 miles per hour.”
