Giant Exercise 2026 Member Bob Melvin

According to the team’s announcement, the Giants have exercised their 2026 club option on manager Bob Melvin. He had previously guaranteed the season at the end of his contract.

“We have the opportunity to work with Bob every day and we are really lucky to have such an experienced leader and one of the most respected managers,” Buster Posey, president of the Giants baseball business, said in a press release announcing the move today. “His leadership, preparation and connection with our players is invaluable and we believe he is the right person to continue to guide this team forward.”

Melvin, 63, was the second season of the Giants’ captain and worked as a track and field manager for 11 years after two years in San Diego. He also managed the D-Backs and the sailors before. Melvin’s first season in San Francisco led to a disappointing 80-82, showing ownership shifts from now-based baseball business president Farhan Zaidi and replaced him with Percy.

Percy wasn’t the one who initially hired Melvin – at least not directly, although Percy was a minority owner before surpassing Baseball Operation – but his three-time Manager of the Year (once working with D-backs and twice with A) was enough to convince him that Melvin was the right person to work.

So far, the Giants have played 500 games in 2025 with a score of 45-40. This put them behind the wildcard rankings by one game but ranked first in the stacked National League West. San Francisco has struggled recently in a drought as the offense becomes cold and has resulted in the Giants 11 of their last 15 games. Melvin’s club started in the 19-12 season until the end of April, but it started 26-28 since May and June’s matches.

Despite the recent struggle, Melvin will have the opportunity to see everything in 2025 and return to manage the club in 2026, when Percy’s vision for the team grew. The Giants under Posey signed Willy Adames and won a stunning June blockbuster for Rafael Devers. Matt Chapman’s six-year extension was a postponement when Zaidi was still president, but Posey reportedly played a major role in pushing the deal after the conversation slowed down. With Mike Yastrzemski and Wilmer getting free agents at the end of the season, the 2026 season could further change the core of Oracle Park’s position players.

“I’m very happy to have the opportunity to continue leading this group,” Melvin said in a press release today. “I believe in what we’ve built here and I’m grateful for the confidence of Giant Ownership Group Greg [Johnson]nemesis, Larry [Baer]Zack [Minasian] The rest of the Giants group showed me and our staff. We have a lot of unfinished business this year and I look forward to future work. ”

Melvin currently maintains the major league managers of the above five teams in 22 seasons with a record of 1642-1547 (.515). In Major League Baseball history, he ranked 20th with Mike Scioscia, behind Mike Scioscia, and trailed only 84 games in 19th place.
