Fire engulfs Heat coach Erik Spoelstra’s home

A fire destroyed a home owned by Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra early Thursday, and officials said more than 20 units were deployed to battle the blaze for more than five hours.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials declared “the home unoccupied” after receiving a call at 4:36 a.m. about a “structure fire in a single-family residence.”

Spoelstra and the Heat played in Denver on Wednesday night. The charter flight back to Miami didn’t land until 5:11 a.m., and he returned home shortly after the plane landed.

As several firefighters worked to control the blaze, Spoelstra was seen walking around outside the house, looking in shock and disbelief.

CBS Miami News reported that firefighters were extinguishing the blaze that engulfed the 5,700-square-foot, five-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home behind a stone wall at Davis Road and Ponce de Leon Boulevard.

“We found the fire as tall as the trees,” said Victoria Byrd, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Battalion Chief.

Most homes were reduced to charred rubble and two buildings were severely damaged, according to drone footage shot by CBS affiliate WFOR in Miami.

The fire was contained to property owned by Spoelstra, and nearby homes were not damaged.

“Our unit came in and did an outstanding job,” Byrd added.

according to miami heraldAccording to the Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser, the house was built in 1985 and has 43,000 square feet. Property records show Spoelstra purchased the home in December 2023.

County records show the property has an open permit for work on the tile roof.

This is Spoelstra’s 18th season as head coach of the Heat. He finalized a deal last month to coach the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

The Heat were scheduled to have Thursday off and host the Charlotte Hornets on Friday night.
