Golf courses are considered intentional – Golf News

Firefighters spent hours fighting a wildfire near the Lithampton Golf Course that charred about two acres of land.

The West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service responded to reports of a wildfire on the edge of the Littlehampton Golf Club near the rope trail on Monday night, July 14.

“This is our second fire in weeks; the first was in the dunes, which we thought was caused by a one-off barbecue, and the second was next to a forklift on the boundary of the route,” the Lithampton Golf Club told Golf News.

“The courses remain open, there are some ashes on the route, but they will disappear soon”

A spokesperson for the service said:
“We were called at 7:05 p.m. to report on a large wildfire at the edge of the Lithampton Golf Club. Four fire trucks and three off-road vehicles were dispatched by Joint Fire Control.”

Upon arrival, the crew encountered a fast moving fire scattered in Gores, reeds, grasslands, trees, about ten tons of hay.

Firefighters wearing respirators soon began to install fires to stop it from spreading further. The crew worked late at night to completely extinguish the flames, flipping carefully and suppressing the area to ensure there were no remaining hot spots.

While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, authorities do not believe it began by chance.

Thankfully, no injuries. However, due to the strong smoke, nearby residents are advised to close doors and windows.

The fire department also issued a reminder to the public that outdoor fires will ignite and spread rapidly during extended dry periods, posing a serious threat to people, property and surrounding countryside. It is highly recommended that you be cautious.
