The top seed successfully defended his title at the Occitanie Open in Montpellier on Sunday afternoon, defeating home favorite Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 7-6(4). Auger-Aliassime faced no break points in the 96-minute victory to secure his ninth tour-level title and eighth on indoor hard courts.

“I think Adrian is always a tough opponent for all the players,” Auger-Aliassime said in an on-court interview. “That’s why myself and all our peers on tour have so much respect for him and the challenge he presents on the course. I knew it was going to be a tough match today, so I’m very happy. It’s so exciting to win again here. I’m excited about the whole week and especially today.”
Auger-Aliassime surpassed Milos Raonic to set a new Open Era record for most Tour wins by a Canadian after back-to-back wins over Stan Wawrinka, Arthur Fiers, Titouan Droghe and Mannarino in Montpellier. Auger-Aliassime has won 89 indoor tour-level matches this decade, the most of any player.
Auger-Aliassime, who withdrew from the first round of the Australian Open due to cramps, will head into the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam with confidence after returning from injury in Montpellier. He will move up two spots to No. 6 in the PIF ATP rankings on Monday before taking to the Dutch court.
Auger-Aliassime got off to a fast start in the first set of Sunday’s final in the south of France. The 25-year-old won the first eight points to take control and ended the match in the ninth with Mannarino’s second break of serve.
The second set was a fierce battle, with both sides serving mainly. Auger-Aliassime won the first break point of the set with a score of 5-4, 30/40, which also became the championship point. Mannarino blocked it with an unreturnable serve, but then Auger-Aliassime scored five consecutive points from 2/4 in the tie-break to complete a straight-sets victory and take a 2-1 lead in the pair’s Lexus ATP series.
As so often happens in his indoor matches, Auger-Aliassime’s serve was the foundation of his eventual victory. He finished the match with an 87% (39/45) first-serve points rate, which was better than 13 aces, according to Infosys ATP statistics.
