Fangraphs Weekly Mail Bags: August 16, 2025

I love a big guy who steals the base. That’s why I was so excited when my friend Kevin submitted a mailbag question about Juan Soto’s basic theft orgy this season. I thought Davy Andrews would be the ideal person to answer Kevin’s questions, as he has written about the basic efficiency of the Mets’ theft in June. I’m right; David is the perfect person. In fact, he was so perfect that he wrote the whole article.
When I let Kevin know about David’s work, he followed up with a question about Josh Naylor, who stole 22 bases as of Friday morning. Of course, Naylor is now a teammate of Cal Raleigh, another slow runner who steals the double-digit number. This topic is too rich to resist, so this is where we start today.
Before we do this, though, I want to yell the 20th birthday to Fangraphs quickly! I’m sure David Appelman would be happy to know that when he created and launched this great website, I was nine years old. Oh, as always, I’ll remind you all of this and anyone can submit a question, the mailbag is unique to Fangraphs members. If you don’t have a membership yet and want to continue reading, you can sign up for a membership here. This is the best way to experience the site again and support our staff and brings many other huge benefits. Also, if you want to ask a question about an upcoming mailbag, please email me: sailbag@fangraphs.com.
