Europe’s best young golfers to compete in ‘unofficial junior golf major’ – Golf News

Europe’s brightest young golf talents will gather in Portugal in December to celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of the most prestigious events in junior golf, the 2025 Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championship at Quinta do Lago.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the championship will once again welcome 24 of the continent’s best players aged 12 to 18, who will play three rounds on the Algarve resort’s world-famous South Course from 1 to 3 December, concluding another exciting season of junior golf.

Known as the “unofficial major of junior golf,” the tournament will return to Quinta do Lago for the ninth time in the past 11 years.

Open to boys and girls aged 18 or under from 1 January 2025, youngsters compete for a place in the final through a series of qualifying events across the UK throughout the year. Among those returning this year is defending men’s champion Charlie Rusbridge from Colne Valley Golf Club in Essex.

Since its inception in 1985, the tournament has proven to be a springboard for future stars. Justin Rose has sponsored the event since 2019, lifting the trophy as a teenager before becoming a Grand Slam champion and Olympic gold medalist. Other notable alumni include his European Ryder Cup teammates Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Fitzpatrick, as well as Ladies European Tour standouts Lottie Ward, Carly Booth, Jodi Ewart Shadoff and Melissa Reid.

Speaking ahead of the event, Rose said: “It’s incredible to see the Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championship celebrate its 40th anniversary, a real milestone for a tournament that has shaped the golfing journeys of many, including my own. “Winning in 1997 was a huge moment in my career and gave me the belief and experience to take the next step towards the professional game.

“I am proud to continue to support this tournament and everything it stands for. I thank Quinta do Lago for once again providing such a great stage for the final and I wish every young player taking part the best of luck.”

Quinta do Lago’s South Course has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times and is part of a three-championship layout that also includes the North Course and La Ranjar. Complementing the golf are state-of-the-art practice facilities, including the resort’s Golf Academy, home to the Quinta do Lago Performance Center in partnership with TaylorMade and the state-of-the-art Paul McGinley Golf Academy, which recently underwent significant upgrades.

Away from the fairways, the Algarve resort is home to The Campus, a state-of-the-art training center that attracts elite athletes and world-class football teams such as Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and the Portuguese national team.

With 14 exclusive bars and restaurants, stylish accommodation at The Magnolia Hotel and the Algarve’s signature sun, scenery and hospitality, Quinta do Lago remains the perfect stage for junior golf’s most prestigious celebration as The Telegraph Junior Golf Championship celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2025.
