European team, wildcards and selection process

European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald is a special observer for the open title at Royal Porthush last week.

With the big points offered in the automatically qualified competition, this is a great opportunity for European hopefuls to have a showdown with the United States at New York Bethpage Black, New York, from September 26 to 28.

It’s also an opportunity to impress people too for those who might need to rely on the captain’s draft pick. Have they put pressure on it? Donald will record carefully.

But how exactly do you get a spot in the European Ryder Cup team? In the past, the European Captain had only two wildcards to play until the two system systems of the Ryder Cup: the European and World Points List.

For Bethpage in 2025, the process has changed again. Let’s explain it.

How to choose a European team?

Among the new changes this year, Europeans have only one Ryder Cup points list. this Top six Qualification will be automatically obtained at the end of the BETFRED Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo on Sunday, August 24. Here is the point to be obtained:

•Band 5 – Main Champion 5000 Points
•Band 4 – PGAT Signature Event/Player/FedEx Playoff Event 3000 points
•Band 3 – DPWT Rolex Series Events and PGAT Regular FedExcup Events 2000 Points
•Band 2 – DPWT BACK 9 event 1500 points
•Band 1 – DPWT Global Series Events and PGAT “Overside” Events 1000 points

The second method to be qualified is through Captain’s draft pick.

Luke Donald has Six of themproviding a route for LIV players such as Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton. LIV golfers do not win points in off-tour and therefore can only win points in Grand Slams or in DP World Tour events.

Donald will select the remaining six members for the week starting Monday, September 1, 2025.

How to see the ranking of European teams after the open championship

It wasn’t a stunning game for the Europeans, as the Americans scored 1-2-3.

Matt Fitzpatrick is the only European in the top six to improve his chances of automatic eligibility.

He got into nine slots, but still ranked 13th.

These are the top six, those

1/Rorry McIlroy (Northern Ireland) – 3440.78pts
2/Robert McIntyre (Scotland) – 1345.44pts
3/Tommy Fleetwood (UK) – 1314.61pts
4/ Tyrrell Hatton (UK) – 1279.33pts
5/ Shane Lowry (Ireland) – 1234.11pts
6/ Sepp Straka (Austria) – 1226.83pts
———————————————
7/ Rasmus Hojgaard (Denmark) – 1135.11pts
8/Justin Rose (UK) – 1019.62pts
9/ Ludvig Aberg (Sweden) – 1006.83pts
10/ Viktor Hovland (Norway) – 930.31pts

For now, only McIlroy is mathematically qualified.

What six wildcard picks could Luke Donald give him?

No doubt Donald would want his big gun to perform better in the open championship game and enter the automatic attractions without relying on public matches.

If he had to send out six draft picks directly after Sunday night’s Royal portrayal, Jon Rahm, Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland would certainly be figured out. Justin Rose, the Master Runner-up and useful No. 16 in the Open, is another person who will almost certainly get a nod.

But besides that, he has a choice. Hojgaard Twins, Rasmus and Nicolai? Thomas Detry was the seven-shot winner of the PGA Tour (Phoenix Open) earlier this year? fifzpatrick? Or, given that this is a long-distance Ryder Cup, maybe a regular on the PGA Tour? English trio Matt Wallace (currently ranked 12th), Aaron Rai (16th) or Harry Hall (24th) will all be done on this basis.

All we know is the clock ticking. When the Open Trophy was handed over to Northern Ireland’s Scottie Scheffler, Donald knew the Ryder Cup had only 67 days to start.
